Question 1

How are accommodation choices confirmed?

Accepted Answer

Accommodation is selected according to your preferred level, route and availability, then named in the final proposal. Website references do not guarantee a booking.

Question 2

Are itinerary prices shown online?

Accepted Answer

Public itineraries are planning examples. Inland Africa confirms current services, availability and pricing in a tailored proposal.

Question 3

Who should I contact for help planning?

Accepted Answer

Use the Plan My Trip form, WhatsApp link or email services@inlandafrica.com. The team will review dates, group details and priorities before confirming a proposal.

Question 4

How far is Volcanoes National Park from Kigali?

Accepted Answer

Volcanoes National Park headquarters (Kinigi) is approximately 110 kilometers north of Kigali by road. The drive typically takes about 2 to 2.5 hours on paved roads. Most gorilla trekking itineraries include an overnight near the park the night before your trek, so you are close to the morning briefing point.

Question 5

How far is Akagera National Park from Kigali?

Accepted Answer

Akagera National Park is approximately 110 to 130 kilometers east of Kigali by road, depending on which park gate you enter. The drive typically takes about 2.5 to 3 hours on paved roads to the park entrance, with travel time inside the park depending on your lodge location. It is one of the most accessible Big Five destinations from a capital city in East Africa.

Question 6

Can families travel with Inland Africa?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Family programs are planned around ages, interests, pace and activity rules. Some wildlife activities have age or participation restrictions that must be confirmed.

Question 7

Is gorilla trekking worth adding to an African safari?

Accepted Answer

For most travelers, yes. Mountain gorilla trekking is one of the most distinctive wildlife experiences in Africa. You spend up to an hour with a habituated gorilla family at close range on foot, in montane forest. It is physically active, carefully managed for conservation, and fundamentally different from a vehicle-based game drive. Rwanda is one of only three countries where this is possible. Many travelers who come for a traditional safari find gorilla trekking to be the most memorable part of their trip.

Question 8

When should I book gorilla permits?

Accepted Answer

Gorilla permits are capacity-constrained and can sell out, especially in peak travel months (June to September and December to February). We recommend starting the planning conversation as early as possible for peak season, ideally several months in advance. For shoulder or low season, there is more flexibility, but permits are still limited each day. We verify permit availability for your dates during the quotation process before you commit.

Question 9

Are gorilla permits included in every itinerary?

Accepted Answer

Only when expressly listed in your confirmed proposal. Availability and current permit terms must be verified for your dates.

Question 10

How physically demanding is gorilla trekking?

Accepted Answer

Conditions vary by terrain, weather and the location of the gorilla family. Discuss fitness, mobility and accessibility needs with the planning team before booking.

Question 11

What should I pack for forest trekking?

Accepted Answer

Bring broken-in footwear with good grip, long trousers, long sleeves, lightweight rain protection and a small day pack. Confirm activity-specific requirements before departure.

Question 12

Can Rwanda be combined with Uganda or Kenya?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Rwanda works well as part of a broader East Africa journey. Common combinations include Rwanda and Uganda (for additional gorilla trekking or chimpanzee tracking in a different setting), or Rwanda and Kenya/Tanzania (for the great migration and more extensive savannah wildlife). These are designed as custom journeys because the logistics, border crossings and flight connections need to be planned carefully. Tell us what you have in mind and we will design it with you.

Question 13

Can a Rwanda journey be tailored?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The planning team shapes routing, pace, accommodation level and activities around your dates, interests and confirmed availability.

Question 14

When should I book a primate trek?

Accepted Answer

As early as practical. Permit availability is limited and changes continuously, so dates should remain flexible until permits and services are confirmed.

Question 15

How do I travel to Rwanda from the United States?

Accepted Answer

U.S. travelers typically fly into Kigali International Airport (KGL) with a connection through an international hub, commonly in Europe (such as Brussels, Amsterdam or Paris) or the Middle East (such as Doha or Istanbul). There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Rwanda. Total travel time depends on your departure city and connection, generally ranging from about 18 to 30 hours including layovers. Flight schedules and routes change, so we help you understand current options as part of the planning conversation rather than publishing schedules that may be out of date.

Question 16

How many days should I spend in Rwanda?

Accepted Answer

It depends on what you want to see and how much travel pace you enjoy. A short gorilla-focused journey can be done in 2 to 3 days. A one-week trip (5 to 7 days) allows gorillas plus a second park such as Akagera for Big Five wildlife or Nyungwe for chimpanzees. A deeper Rwanda journey of 8 to 10 days can combine gorillas, Big Five, chimpanzees and Lake Kivu. For travelers combining Rwanda with Uganda or Kenya/Tanzania, 10 days or more is typical. We design each itinerary around your dates and interests rather than fitting you to a fixed template.

Question 17

Can Inland Africa customize a Rwanda itinerary?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Every itinerary we design is built around your dates, pace, interests and budget. Our published safari packages are starting points. We reshape them for each traveler. You can request a custom itinerary through our trip planner, by asking Rafiki, our trip-planning assistant, or by contacting us directly. We verify availability for capacity-constrained services (gorilla permits, chimpanzee permits, accommodation) before you receive a final quotation.

Question 18

Can I combine gorilla trekking and a Big Five safari in Rwanda?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Rwanda offers both in a compact, well-organized country. Gorilla trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park in the northwest, and Big Five game drives (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros) take place in Akagera National Park in the east. The two parks are reachable by road from Kigali, so a combined journey is practical in about 7 to 9 days. Our 9-Day Primates and Big Five Expedition is built for exactly this combination.

Question 19

What should I pack for Rwanda?

Accepted Answer

Rwanda's climate is mild due to altitude, with temperatures generally comfortable year-round. For gorilla trekking, pack sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, gardening gloves (for nettle protection), a light rain jacket, and layers for cool mornings. For game drives, neutral-colored clothing, a hat and sun protection are recommended. A detailed packing guide is available in our Rwanda travel guide section. We provide a tailored packing list as part of your pre-departure information.

Question 20

Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?

Accepted Answer

No. Gorillas, chimpanzees and safari animals are wild. Authorized guides and trackers provide the best possible experience, but sightings and duration cannot be guaranteed.
