Golden Monkey Trekking

Golden-monkey tracking brings a different energy to the Virunga forest — fast-moving, mobile and rewarding.

Golden-monkey tracking brings a different energy to the Virunga forest. These endangered primates move quickly through the bamboo zones of Volcanoes National Park, feeding, climbing and changing direction with little concern for a photographer's plans. The encounter is often more mobile than gorilla trekking and can provide an excellent second perspective on the park.

What the Experience Feels Like

The activity begins with a briefing at Kinigi and proceeds with authorized park personnel. Treks are often shorter than gorilla tracking, but visitors should still expect uneven, wet or muddy ground. Describing the experience as universally easy would be misleading. Golden monkeys are closely associated with the Virunga's bamboo habitat, making the landscape part of the story. Watching the group move through this vegetation helps travelers understand that Volcanoes National Park protects more than one flagship species.

What to Expect

  • •Morning briefing
  • •Forest and bamboo walking
  • •Fast-moving animals
  • •Challenging light for photography
